Description

Who it is for and what it is for

A treat for wild birds on frosty days. Nuts with fat provide plenty of energy.

How to feed

  • Start when snow falls and frost sets in, and the birds cannot find food on their own. Do not start too early (recommendations of OTOP, the Polish Society for the Protection of Birds, and GDOŚ, the General Directorate for Environmental Protection).
  • Feed regularly, because birds quickly get used to a feeder (OTOP, GDOŚ).
  • Place the feeder at least 1.2 m above the ground, away from windows and out of reach of predators (GDOŚ, OTOP).
  • Wash the feeder with hot water, without detergents (OTOP).

Questions

When should you start feeding birds in winter?

OTOP advises starting in late autumn, when snow falls and frost sets in. GDOŚ adds that you should not start too early, only when snow makes it hard for birds to forage.

Should you feed birds in a mild winter?

According to OTOP and GDOŚ, in a winter without snow or frost birds cope on their own, so feeding is not needed then.
