Description
Who it is for and what it is for
Small birds especially like sunflower: greenfinches, nuthatches and tits. The oil in the seeds gives them energy during hard frosts.
How to feed
- Start when snow falls and frost sets in, and the birds cannot find food on their own. Do not start too early (recommendations of OTOP, the Polish Society for the Protection of Birds, and GDOŚ, the General Directorate for Environmental Protection).
- Feed regularly, because birds quickly get used to a feeder (OTOP, GDOŚ).
- Put out small portions so that the food does not sit there. Remove mouldy food (GDOŚ, OTOP).
- Place the feeder at least 1.2 m above the ground, away from windows and out of reach of predators (GDOŚ, OTOP).

Mostly small birds, such as greenfinches, nuthatches and tits.
When should you start feeding birds in winter?
OTOP advises starting in late autumn, when snow falls and frost sets in. GDOŚ adds that you should not start too early, only when snow makes it hard for birds to forage.
Should you feed birds in a mild winter?
According to OTOP and GDOŚ, in a winter without snow or frost birds cope on their own, so feeding is not needed then.
